My name is Carol Smith and I am a family and funeral celebrant. Enjoying playing a role in organising funerals for close family members and being asked to speak at weddings and christenings is what led to me becoming a Civil Celebrant.

Everyone’s story is different and that’s why no two ceremonies are the same. I find that the ceremonies that resonate most are those that are personalised and appropriate for the people involved.

Whether you are celebrating the joy of a new life with a naming ceremony, the formal coming together of two lives through a wedding, the longevity of a marriage with a vow renewal, or the milestones in a loved one’s life after they’ve passed on, with a funeral or memorial service, I will work closely with you to craft the ceremony you want.

When my daughter was planning her wedding she found the options available in licensed venues narrow and restrictive. She particularly wanted a wedding that reflected who she and her partner are; young, original, and spontaneous, with a love of music festivals and travel. Her wedding celebration was held in giant tipis in a field and I helped her to create a very beautiful, unique and memorable ceremony. It was a wonderful day.

At a work colleague’s funeral, her family approached me to help them create the ceremony that she would have loved. Cheeky, irreverent, non-religious, yet moving and close to nature. She was a massive Queen fan. Everyone commented on what a joyous celebration of her life the ceremony was. When ‘I want to Break Free’ played at the end, the whole room was filled with love and gratitude that they’d shared in the life of a very special person.

It is often said that a good celebrant needs three essential skills – to be a good listener, a good writer and a great performer.

I believe that my years as an English teacher has enabled me to develop those skills as well as many more, including relationship building, collaboration and adaptability.

Last year I became a grandmother. Family is very important to me, it’s where I enjoy my time and make my fondest memories. This is why I want to help other families create special memories as they celebrate their significant milestones along life’s journey.

The Somerset Celebrant is based in the beautiful Southwest of England but I also conduct ceremonies further afield.
