I was born and brought up in Scotland where I met my husband David and have three boys. A job move for David meant the family heading south to Colchester, which has been home for the last 26 years. Family life has expanded with lovely daughters-in-law and three grandchildren and a cheeky cocker spaniel, Bobby.
Career wise I have worked in Banking, Insurance, Retail and for the last 26 years, the University of Essex.
My background since working for the Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance Group is in HR and completing my professional CIPD exams in 1996. The next job move, and where I (known as Marianne at work) took up a Senior Management post, as Personnel and Training Manager in the University of Essex Students’ Union. Fast forward, 21 years and I still work with the Students’ Union and am the Deputy Chief Executive. It is an exciting and dynamic organisation to work for representing 14,500 students, from 149 countries worldwide, across three campuses.
I was the founder of a Guide Company in Glasgow and a Brownie Pack in Edinburgh. My love of hats led me setting up a Hat Hire Company in Glasgow which was a great success and a lot of fun. Volunteer work included being Chair of Governors for a local Infant School and volunteering on projects through the Students’ Union. I love travelling, socialising and generally anything to do with people.
The reason I want to be a Celebrant is to make a difference to people at a time of need or in happy occasions. I have the ability to empathise with any situation and have years of experience in dealing with challenging situations as well as very happy ones.
