My name is Matthew Adam, and I am an Independent Celebrant based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. I came to celebrancy having previously worked as a professional toastmaster and master of ceremonies for 5 years. As a toastmaster, I attended many civil weddings where the registrars have a fixed script that they are required to stick to, and I often felt it would be nice if they could make the ceremony more unique, more special, and more bespoke to the couple getting married.
As a Toastmaster, I always work to the principle that I am here to serve, and to ensure that the couple’s wedding day is exactly what they want it to be, and I bring that same ethos to celebrancy. I am completely professional, understanding that this is an important milestone in the lives of the people who book me, and I enjoy challenging and unusual demands! This is why I chose to train with and join the UK Society of Celebrants.
Although many people who book a celebrant are seeking a completely secular ceremony, there are occasions where the couple want to bring some element of religion into the ceremony – particularly for mixed faith relationships. I am very comfortable to work with the couple to find ways to achieve this – and being Jewish myself, I find I can connect with people and talk comfortably about issues relating to belief.
When I’m not helping people celebrate their life events, I run a small IT training business.
